|Date||October 25, 2021 5:00 PM–6:00 PM|
Join Dr. Angelica Cortez, Founder and Executive Director of LEAD Filipino, a San Jose-based nonprofit in a session on community organizing to push for true police reform and accountability in California. As the policy working group leader on the Justice for Angelo Quinto! Justice for All! Coalition, Dr. Cortez managed the statewide advocacy efforts that led to the eventual signage of Assembly Bill (AB) 490, The Justice for Angelo Quinto Act of 2021. She will discuss the local and statewide Filipina/x/o American (FilAm) community response to the murder of Angelo Quinto and how grassroots efforts brought his case to the national stage. During Filipino American History Month (FAHM) we celebrate and honor the historic contributions, achievements, and struggles of FilAms. Angelo’s death catapulted California’s population of 1.5 million FilAms into direct action, calling for immediate reforms to policing and renewing this community’s appetite to advance social justice.
