Capute Mentor: Christy Teranishi-Martinez Psychology Program, California State University Channel Islands In the last century history has provided us with a vivid illustration that current arrangements in society are not viable, that we suddenly have hit the wall in terms of our collective consciousness. We need to enhance the knowledge of economic psychological problems, in order to construct a solution for a society that is in grave danger. The present research tested the effect of materialism and debt on satisfaction with life. California State University Channel Islands College students enrolled in Interdisciplinary Psychology, Sociology, Economics and Communications classes, both male and female (N=173), were given surveys with questions regarding materialism values, consumer attitudes on debt, and satisfaction with life. Statistical analysis supported the hypothesis that as materialism and debt increased, life satisfaction decreased. Significant statistical findings included frequency of work, income, gender and ethnicity categories. The results of these findings can support an improved understanding of economic psychological problems in modern society. Keywords: Materialism,Debt, Life Satisfaction
