The Movement of Bullying

Heather Castillo, Performing Arts Faculty, California State University Channel IslandsThe Movement of Bullying will explore the many facets of the bullying epidemic through dance and movement. From examples highlighted in the media and It Gets Better campaign, along with guidance from bully expert Julia Bálen from CSUCI, twenty-five students will assemble an approximate five to ten minute dance piece. Through the use of multi-media in conjunction with movement, dancers will highlight models of bullying and offer through choreography a blueprint to begin the process of change and enlightenment. Movement vocabulary will be created exploring the language of bullying, cyber-bullying, self-bullying, cycle of bullying, and the isolationism of victims. Choreography will highlight spatial relationships, dynamic physical pictures, and theatre techniques to demonstrate the ubiquitous nature of bullying and the roles we all play. In conclusion the dance will offer an alternative model of interaction as a possible solution and catalyst for change. The dance can be presented in any open space, a stage is unnecessary. A projector and screen with audio system will be needed to accompany the presentation.
