Striping Spring Street

Gwen Urey , Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, California State Polytechnic University PomonaThe Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) recently implemented innovative green bicycle lanes on Spring Street, a major downtown thoroughfare. This poster displays the results of a LADOT study performed to evaluate and select an optimal material for future installations based on several criteria. Effectiveness of the material is based on the durability of the material, reflectivity, color retainment, and traction. A schematic illustration shows the location and extent of each material being studied. Photographs document the material’s individual performance on asphalt versus concrete paving. A brief analysis of the pros and cons will include cost analysis and detail the effectiveness criteria for each material. As cities experiment with colored bicycle lanes and other forms of colored pavement treatments as a means of improving street design it is increasingly important to find the most effective materials and best methods of introducing them.
