Designing an aquaponics system Authors: Austin Finnegan, Sean Kramer Mentor: Maryam Shafahi Mechanical Engineering Department, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Aquaponics is a symbiotic interaction between fish and plants. In this beneficial cycle nutrient wastes from fish tank are utilized to fertilize the plants. In turn, plant bed/root functions as a biofilter for the water contaminated with fish manure, algae and decomposing fish feed. The integration of fish and plant is a polyculture that increases diversity and enhances system stability. We designed and built an aquaponic prototype in Cal Poly center of regenerative study. There is a number of engineering aspects involved in this bio-friendly system such as piping, heating and structural analysis for the frames. The purpose of this project is studying the optimized situation for the fish and plant life.
