My presentation examines alternative treatments beyond the traditional medications used in treating ADHD. It has been argued that doctors often over prescribe Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) medication. An enormous rise in prescriptions for ADHD medication has accompanied the alarming increase in the rates of diagnosis of ADHD reported for the United States. Alternative treatment methods can be used to make traditional medications more effective and can sometimes be an effective replacement for traditional medications. Additionally, these alternative treatments have few side effects. More research on alternative treatment methods can increase their use or make people more aware of the range of choices for individual treatment for ADHD patients. The therapeutic community and patients and families must become more informed of the range of choices for individual treatment for ADHD patients including alternatives. This enhanced awareness should stimulate demand and encourage more research.
