Description: Introduction to the physical processes of the ocean and their interactions with Earth systems. Topics include plate tectonics and seafloor geology, water properties and seawater chemistry, atmosphere¿ocean circulation, waves, tides, coasts and sea-level change, and human¿ocean interactions. Includes a weekly laboratory emphasizing quantitative problem-solving, data collection/analysis, and communication of results. Satisfies GE 5A and 5C. Three hours lecture and three hours lab per week; no prerequisites.
