Consult CSUCI CatalogSOC 450: Seminar in Sociology Global Cities: Command and Control Centers of Globalization The era of neoliberal globalization has brought with it no shortage of enormous transformations to social, economic, and political life. While many focus on the speeding up or the compression of time and space resulting from transportation and technological innovations, an equally important dynamic is the emergence of key geographies, known as ¿global cities,¿ where important globalizing processes touch down and take root. Our seminar will focus on these global cities and their role in a globalized world. We will immerse ourselves in the literature on global cities, broadly, and also specific case studies of Los Angeles, CA and Shanghai, China, to explore: the structure of globalization created by these cities; the particular activities that constitute and connect them; the lived experience of their residents, including both high-level workers and increasingly vulnerable populations; the potential for social and political movements within global cities; and the ramifications of global cities for local places, cultures, and environments.
