Notes
Prerequisite course required. Consult CSUCI CatalogCourse Title: Women and the Wilderness In this course, students will take a sociological approach to understanding the role of gender and sexuality in shaping women (and men and non-binary folks') experiences in working and playing in nature. Much of the course will focus on access to and experiences working in the wild. We will start by reviewing women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people's representation and experiences working and playing in nature, and some explanations for their underrepresentation. Then, we will talk about what makes nature-based work unique (compared with other male-dominated spaces) for women and LGBTQ individuals, and the unique circumstances of some nature-based work (e.g., remote field sites, overnight trips) that makes harassment, discrimination, and bullying particularly pronounced. Finally, we will talk about interventions people have tried to increase representation, and we will focus particularly on interventions in higher education that involve field sciences and field stations. As part of this course, students will be expected to travel with our class on an all-expense-paid class field trip to CSUCI's own field station on Santa Rosa Island as part of a weekend field trip, Friday March, 21st- Monday, March 24th.
