SOC 332 - Race and Ethnicity

Description

Hours: Three hours lecture per week Prerequisite: Junior Standing and successful completion of Golden Four GE Areas (A1, A2, A3, B4) Description: Examines from a social science perspective how racial categories do not naturally exist, but rather are socially constructed, and how these constructs relate to historical power relations. Exposes students to the study of how racism takes many forms, not just prejudice and stereotypes but also structural disadvantage, and how ethnic identities are fluid, influenced by immigration patterns as well as racialization. Explores experiences of inequality and self-identity among various groups, including Native American, African American, Latinx, Asian American, and Middle Eastern. Culminates in a discussion of the future of racial and ethnic boundaries and hierarchies in American society and beyond. Formerly SOC 360, effective Fall 2021
