Notes

Course provides an overview of anthropological approaches to the study of gender systems, both theoretically and ethnographically. Issues include: biological and evolutionary perspectives, division of labor and space, cultural constructions of femininity and masculinity, how conceptions of the body inform gender and sexual identity and vice-versa, third genders and alternative sexualities, and roles of the state, kinship, and ideology in gender systems.
