Description: Hours: Three hours lecture per week Description: Examines intersecting histories of the Indian Ocean as the setting in which peoples from East Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Sub-Continent, East Asia, and Southeast Asia encountered one another and exchanged ideas, goods, and even diseases over many centuries. A particular emphasis on the environment, the spread of religious and other cultural ideas and practices, port cities, migrant and diasporic communities, piracy, colonialism, and various globalizing trends throughout history.
