Description: This writing intensive, interdisciplinary course examines the relationship between mass communication, mass media, and youth culture. Students analyze how populations that have been historically marginalized and often stigmatized in U.S. society are represented in media including patterns of mis-representation. Topics include the theories and effects of mass communication, in particular the effects of mass media on children and adolescents. To develop media literacy, students will apply these concepts to their own experiences with popular media, including television, print, and film. Students must earn a C- or better to fulfill the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR).
