Description: Students will develop an understanding of the theory, research, and practice of teaching early language and literacy in multilingual classrooms (preschool, TK, and early elementary). Emphasis will be placed on comprehending and examining how children develop as listeners, speakers, readers, and writers within their socio-cultural and socio-linguistic contexts. Students will use an assets-based prespective to explore, plan, and implement teaching practices that support the language and literacy development of multilingual learners. Emphasis will be placed on engaging and supporting children¿s language and literacy development by utilizing teaching strategies that infuse family funds of knowledge, culturally sustaining pedagogy, inclusive instruction, and are reflective of the communities of the young learners. Students will explore and utilize various methods and assessment tools to evaluate and assess the language and literacy development of their young multilingual students.
