Description: Hours: Three hours lecture a week Prerequisite: Successful completion of Golden Four GE Areas (1A, 1B, 1C, 2) Description: This interdisciplinary course examines the sociocultural, environmental, and economic significance of sandy beaches in California and beyond. It explores the dynamic interactions between natural and human systems within the coastal zone, addressing topics such as the physical and biological characteristics of beaches, anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems, and coastal development challenges. Through case studies, guest lectures, and discussion, students will engage with diverse perspectives on California beach culture and sustainability. The course highlights the role of beaches in shaping regional identity while examining pressing issues like climate change, sea level rise, and environmental justice. Students will apply their understanding of California¿s beaches to global examples, culminating in a final project that underscores the universal importance of sandy beaches and the complex challenges they face.
