Notes

  • This course explores the relationship between society and the environment. It centers on three processes: how human activity impacts the natural environment; how environmental destruction disproportionately affects poor communities of color; and how efforts to protect the environment can reflect and reproduce existing power hierarchies. The themes discussed in this course complement other sociological topics, including classical theory, inequality, globalization, and the social construction of scientific knowledge. Students will analyze research methods and apply environmental sociological concepts to multiple empirical contexts.
