  • Soc 450.03: ¿Walk it Off, Son¿: The Sociology of Sport For Sociologists, Sports are often introduced to students as a social institution which plays a role in our socialization. While factual, Sport(s) is much more than simply a place where we learn about teamwork and competition. It is also an arena through which our Society is (re)imagined and (re)made. This seminar explores the connection between Sports and our social world. We will focus on issues, which occur within and around Sports, that influence our behaviors, identities, and group dynamics. These topics will include, but not limited to, issues relating to race, white supremacy, class, gender, sexuality, nationalism, health, and violence. This course acknowledges the differential power structures that exist in our society and therefore makes use of perspectives and lenses that are critical of structural inequalities and the privileges they produce. This seminar requires active and frequent student participation throughout the semester. Students are encouraged to make use of their own experiences with Sports when engaging with the assigned topics. Game on!
