Biography
Sydney Kim is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the Martin V. Smith School of Business and Economics. Prior to joining CSUCI in 2024, Dr. Kim earned a Ph.D. in Accountancy, specializing in Financial Accounting and Data Analytics, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her academic journey also includes a Master’s degree in Development Policy from the KDI School and a Bachelor’s degree in Management Science from KAIST.
Dr. Kim teaches courses such as ACCT 330: AIS and Data Analytics and ACCT 300: Applied Managerial Accounting. Her classes offer a vibrant, hands-on learning experience that prepares students to tackle the complexities of today’s business landscape. Her teaching approach emphasizes practical skill development, critical thinking, and the integration of digital tools to enhance engagement and real-world readiness. Students work with various technologies and real-world datasets, gaining insights from industry leaders who regularly join as guest speakers.
Dr. Kim’s research takes an interdisciplinary approach, bridging accounting, finance, data analytics, and textual analysis. Her work explores critical areas such as AI, ESG, and Human Capital from an accounting perspective, and her findings have been presented to prominent regulatory bodies, including the SEC and federal bank regulators, underscoring the practical impact and relevance of her research.
Beyond teaching and research, Dr. Kim brings professional experience as a macroeconomic and equity analyst. She grew up in Seoul, South Korea, and enjoys art, music, and traveling.
