Biography
Dr. Philip Hampton joins CSU Channel Islands as an Associate Professor after serving for ten years as a faculty member in the Chemistry Department at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, NM.
During his tenure at UNM, Dr. Hampton has served as Chair of the Graduate Selection Committee at UNM, as a member of the Department and University Undergraduate Committees, and as supervisor of the undergraduate organic laboratory. He was recognized for his outstanding teaching and service to students in 1996 with the prestigious UNM Alumni Association Faculty Award.
Dr. Hampton received his B.A. in Chemistry from St. Olaf College in 1984 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1989 in Organic Chemistry. His Ph.D. research involved a biomimetic study of the liver enzyme cytochrome P-450. In 1989, Dr. Hampton was awarded a California Institute of Technology Prize Postdoctoral Fellowship to perform postdoctoral research at Caltech for two years in the area of polymer/ organometallic chemistry.
After finishing his postdoctoral work in 1991, Dr. Hampton accepted a faculty position in the Organic Division of the Chemistry Department at UNM. His research interests are in areas of molecular recognition, inhibitor design and synthesis, sensor development, and organometallic and polymer chemistry. Dr. Hampton is committed to excellence in undergraduate education and the use of learning communities and the Internet in his teaching.
