Biography

Merilyn Buchanan joined CSUCI from the University of Cambridge and the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Prior to her appointment in the UK, Dr. Buchanan was a demonstration teacher at the Lab School of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California Los Angeles.
She was awarded a Ph.D. from UCLA in 1991 in the area of Policy, Administration and the Study of Schooling. Her Master’s degree and undergraduate work was completed at the University of Liverpool in England.
Dr. Buchanan teaches in the Pre-Requisite and Multiple Subject Teaching Credential programs at CI, working extensively with student teachers during their field experiences in local elementary schools. Her interest in the function of professional development schools in the education and development of pre- and in-service teachers has led to her close relationship with the University Charter Schools at CSUC,I and to her role as co-founder of the Southern California Professional Development School Consortium.
Dr. Buchanan is a member of an international team of volunteer mathematics educators who work with The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC) to provide professional development courses for teachers from highly impacted schools in South Africa.
