Biography
Luis Sánchez is an Associate Professor of Sociology. He joined the CSU Channel Islands faculty in Fall 2013. Prior to arriving at CI, Luis completed a dual Ph.D. in Sociology and Demography at The Pennsylvania State University. His teaching and research interests include immigration, immigrant incorporation, social demography, and quantitative research methods.
Dr. Sánchez’s current research examines immigrant homeownership with a particular focus on racial/ethnic and geographic variation in housing tenure. His work also considers the varying contexts experienced by immigrants in traditional (i.e. Los Angeles) and emerging immigrant gateways (i.e. places in the South and Midwest) and how they might influence the immigrant incorporation process.
In the classroom, Luis’s teaching emphasizes the importance of data, measurement, and statistical analyses in the systematic study of social phenomena. Furthermore, he enjoys exposing students to demographic perspectives as a way to make sense of the sources and implications of population change taking place at the local, national, and world levels.
As a native of Santa Paula, Luis is excited to be back in Ventura County and part of the CSU Channel Islands community. He enjoys running, playing tennis, and cheering on his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes (where he received his B.A. and met his wife) on college football Saturdays in the fall.
