Biography

Professor Lillian Vega Castaneda joined the faculty of CSUCI in 2001 as one of the first original thirteen faculty. She led the development and writing of the Elementary Teaching Credential for approval by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and wrote and developed various curricula for the credential in elementary teacher preparation (Multiple Subjects). Vega-Castaneda also led the development of the previous Bilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) credential for the preparation of bilingual teachers. Professor Vega Castaneda developed and wrote the current Bilingual Authorization for certification of bilingual teachers in CA. She has taught at the undergraduate (Liberal Studies), pre-credential and graduate levels in the following areas: multicultural education, bilingual, English Language Development, social foundations, research methods, media literacy and social context of education and language. I am semi-retired and continue to teach part-time at Channel Islands.


Professor Vega Castaneda has conducted qualitative and sociolinguistic research in language and literacy in mainstream and multilingual contexts, community based education, and second language acquisition for English Only and English Language learners. Current scholarship includes the nature of communication (online, distant as opposed to face-to-face interaction) on social media with respect to issues about diversity and difference in a social, cultural and historical context. Previous scholarship includes the use of narratives in teacher education with ethnic minority and mainstream pre-service and in-service teachers. She is currently working on a book that focuses on the use of social media as a way of communicating ideas and opinions on difference and diversity, within a social, cultural, historical context.

She previously taught at California State University, San Marcos from 1992 – 2001.

Professor Vega Castaneda completed her doctoral studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in the area of Teaching, Curriculum and Learning Environments.
