Biography
Dr. Elizabeth Hartung is a proud Midwesterner with earned degrees from land grant institutions (a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln; and M.A. and B.S. degrees from Kansas State University, Manhattan (the “little apple"), Kansas). She comes to CSU, Channel Islands from CSU, Fresno, where she served as department chair. At Fresno, she began several scholarships and awards for students: a departmental paper prize for outstanding undergraduate work, an international study scholarship (the Richard Freimuth International Study Scholarship), and thanks to the work of former dean Ellen Gruenbaum, an endowed scholarship for outstanding students in Sociology. She has been involved in international education through Fresno State’s London Semester Program, through the University Studies Abroad Consortium in Bilbao, Spain, and most recently, she led a summer seminar for future teachers in Barcelona in 2003. Before coming to Fresno, she taught at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and the University of Nebra ska, Omaha. Her areas of interest in teaching and scholarship are broad and keep shifting – stratification and social inequality, especially gender inequality, and popular culture. Her most recent publications include an edited collection (with Peter Kivisto, Augustana College), Intersecting Inequalities: Race, Class, Gender and Sexualities, Prentice Hall (2006) and a commentary on the impact international education has on American students, “The Student as Outsider," published in International Educator (May, 2002). Beth looks forward to welcoming students to the Sociology program this fall, and launching an exciting and challenging set of classes with her new colleagues.
