Biography

Geoff Dougherty has more than 40 years of experience teaching at university level. He joined CSU Channel Islands in 2002 as Professor of Physics after serving ten years as Professor of Medical Imaging, and several years as Chairman of the Radiologic Sciences Department, at Kuwait University. Whilst there he planned and implemented a revised curriculum for the teaching of medical imaging. Prior to this he was the Chair of Physics and Physical Sciences at Oxford Brookes University, where he led the development and accreditation of a new double major in electronics and supervised several Ph.D. projects in biomedical instrumentation. He worked for the Open University, tutoring classes in technology and communications for mature students, and has served on the faculties of the Science University of Malaysia and the University of the South Pacific, where he developed and taught distance-learning courses in electronics and materials science. He developed the Applied Physics Major and Minor, and the Medical Imaging Emphasis within the Biology program at CSUCI.

Dr. Dougherty is actively pursuing research in medical imaging and image analysis, including the assessment of texture in clinical images of trabecular bone and the quantitation of tortuosity in blood vessels. He has published numerous articles in international journals and several books and book chapters, and has won a variety of competitive research grants. His textbook on image processing (Cambridge University Press) has been translated into Korean. He developed a number of physico-chemical techniques to characterize the binding of drugs to DNA: this work began at Keele University, England and was continued at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and at Monash University, Australia and during a sabbatical period at Swarthmore College. He undertook research in Diffusion Tensor Imaging of cartilage at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane in 2009 as a Fulbright Senior Scholar. He was a Fulbright Specialist from 2013-2018, and was awarded a second Fulbright Senior Scholarship for 2022 in Indonesia. He is on the Editorial Boards of several journals, and regularly referees manuscripts for a number of scientific journals.

Dr. Dougherty holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and is a Professional Engineer. He is a Senior Specialist in engineering education for the Fulbright program, and is the Fulbright Scholar Liaison at CSUCI. He has been the liaison faculty for the CSU Nuclear and Particle Physics Consortium (NUPAC) at CSUCI since 2008. He is committed to excellence in education and to professional service. He is a keen photographer and painter and enjoys listening to music.
