Merilyn Buchanan joined CSUCI from the University of Cambridge and the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Prior to her appointment in the UK, Dr. Buchanan was a demonstration teacher at Seeds UES, the Lab School of the Graduate School of Education at University of California Los Angeles. She was awarded a Ph.D. from UCLA in 1991 in the area of Policy, Administration and the Study of Schooling. Her Master’s degree and undergraduate work was completed at the University of Liverpool in England. Dr. Buchanan teaches in the Pre-Requisite and Multiple Subject Teaching Credential programs at CI, working extensively with student teachers during their field experiences in local elementary schools. Her interest in the function of professional development schools in the education and development of pre- and in-service teachers has led to her close relationship with the University Charter Schools at CSUCI and to her role in founding the Southern California Professional Development School Consortium. Dr. Buchanan has two major areas of interest in school curriculum: the impact of technology on the teaching and learning of mathematics at the elementary school level, and how schools identify and provide for children’s mathematical talents and needs. Dr. Buchanan is a member of an international team of volunteer mathematics educators providing annual professional development courses to enhance the knowledge and practice of teachers from highly impacted schools in South Africa through The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC),
