Project Details Project description: I intend to engage four URM students in a writing project during the summer of 2013. There will be a total of four graduate students recruited into this project. As the faculty supervisor, I am developing this writing exercise to train and mentor the students in the field of technical writing. The project will focus on the synthesis of a Lab Manual as utilized in a biological wet-lab. This Lab Manual, specific to the area of biotechnology (molecular and cellular biology), will have two components: (a) Protocol and (b) Biosafety. The four students will work in pairs with each pair focusing on one component of the manual (2 students will develop the Protocol component while 2 students will develop the Biosafety component). The Lab Manual is a highly valuable tool in a lab setting, one that students can refer to for designing their experiments, preparing reagents using specific recipes and for reference with regard to biosafety guidelines.

Student Learning Outcomes: Students who participate in this writing project will be able to:
i. Perform an extensive survey of currently followed experimental and biosafety protocols in molecular and cellular biology.
ii. Conduct a technical assessment of experimental and biosafety protocols.
iii. Write out specific protocols and biosafety rules and compile them into a lab manual.

Goals and deliverables: Students will be taught the strategies of conducting a technical review of currently used biological experimental lab protocols and biosafety guidelines, using comprehensive lab manuals (available as compendia), scientific databases, library resources and industrial company websites. For the biosafety component, students will be exposed to federal and state regulatory sites (NIH, NSF, ATCC, CIRM, etc.) and will be expected to perform a significant amount of research to finally deliver a lab manual with biosafety protocols designed and written by them, specific to the fields of cellular and molecular biology. As the field is highly focused, the writing will naturally be highly technical and focused as well.
Eligibility Requirements Applicants should be currently enrolled in the MS Biotechnology or MS/MBA dual degree prpgram at CI. Preference will be given to under-represented minority students or first generation college students.
Deadline 5/10/2013
