Dr. Mary Adler joins California State University Channel Islands as Assistant Professor of English Education. She comes to CSUCI from the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY), where she earned her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction. While at SUNY, she worked for two years as a lead facilitator with the Partnership for Literacy, a school-university collaboration of professional and instructional development for practicing middle school English Language Arts teachers in New York and Wisconsin. Her research interests focus on areas that have traditionally been marginalized in the literature and in practice, including the teaching of creative writing at the secondary level and the effects of interdisciplinary instruction on students’ understanding of the discipline. Current scholarship includes publications in how changing classroom discourse patterns can influence instruction, student learning, and curriculum development.Dr. Adler holds secondary teaching credentials in English and History from California State University, Northridge. She is a National Writing Project fellow from the University at California, Los Angeles. Previous to her doctoral work, she taught middle school and adult school in Los Angeles, CA.
